Fiona Banner: Nude

3 May - 23 Jun 2006 Soho Square
Overview

For this exhibition of new work, Fiona Banner continues her exploration of the problems and possibilities of language.

Much of the work deals with The Female Nude as a classical artistic subject, here described in words directly from life. In sharp contrast to this gentle and meditative act Banner has applied one such description to the wing of a Tornado aircraft whose brutal scale dwarfs the gallery’s domestic interior. These startling and very immediate works perform an almost complete cycle of intimacy and alienation; the dynamic between the two has been a constant in the artist’s work

Language and the written word are central to Banner’s practice, she has in the past created epic word-scapes – blow by blow accounts of war and porn films- pieces which beguile the eye but never deny the more problematic nature of the subject matter.
