Marciano Art Foundation presents the US debut of Tacita Dean’s landmark installation FILM.
FILM, 2011 is a silent, 35mm film projected onto a towering, thirty-one-foot-tall monolith. Using techniques from the earliest era of filmmaking when the medium was new, exciting and full of invention, Dean has created in FILM a monument to the beauty, poetry, and distinctively analog expressivity of motion picture film. Shot using an anamorphic lens, traditionally used for wide landscape format, Dean turned the image on its side to create a vertical portrait of the medium of “film” itself. Made at a time when photochemical film was facing medium extinction, FILM became an important rallying call for the world to take notice of a beautiful medium it was on the point of losing.
Organized by Marciano Art Foundation Director Hanneke Skerath and independent curator Mark Toscano, this will mark the first time the work has been presented in the United States.
