Frith Street Gallery is delighted to announce a special solo presentation by Juan Uslé at the forthcoming Frieze London. Entitled Entre Pasos - Between Steps, this major room-sized installation marks a new development in the artist’s work. The piece embraces the viewer, combining 210 photographs and paintings arranged rhythmically on the walls above and below a horizon line of intense colour.
Uslé’s paintings evoke a range of associations, from the cadence of human breath and the beat of a pulse to the environs and energy of his homes in northern Spain and New York City. Photography is also a vital though perhaps lesser-known part of his practice; he uses it to record the small instances which can be noticed only through the camera. Like his works on canvas the photographic images are dominated by sensory and intellectual pleasure and even play, they narrow the gap between reality and fiction, photography and painting.

The new photographs have been taken in London, New York and the artist’s hometown of Saro in northern Spain. They capture his encounters with the everyday in these very distinct environments with varying degrees of abstraction and convey a sense of walking through the urban landscape with no other intention than to observe. The subtle combination of painting and photography prompts a wide range of artistic and visual references uniting often fleeting impressions with various painterly languages. The relationship between the two mediums does not suggest a translation from one to the other, rather it prompts a closer look, highlighting Uslé’s long-standing preoccupation with exploring his immediate surroundings using a camera and the refined works on canvas that emerge in dialogue with this.
