Fiona Tan: Symposium

Akademie Van Kunstden, Amsterdam

2 December 2022, 10 am–5 pm

The Trippenhuis Building (KNAW), Kloveniersburgwal 29, 1011 JV Amsterdam

Entrance is free, registration is required

Bringing together 11 international speakers including Fiona Tan herself, the symposium will ask questions such as: What to keep, what to discard, how to remember? What to do with historical archives in the post-internet, post-colonial, postmodern era? How to re-examine and redefine our relationship to technology and to lens-based images? What exactly is the relationship between image, language and perception when looking at nature? Is the museum taking the place of arthouse cinema and is this a good thing?

Structured around three sessions this one-day symposium will explore transitional areas of theory and practice in the fields of art, film and beyond. Subject matter for this symposium centres around themes which we feel are crucial to address today; topics which have the potential to reach out across different disciplines and supposed oppositions: art versus science, theory versus practice, physical versus immaterial. Throughout the day there will be opportunity to share, exchange, discuss and inspire.
