Fiona Tan's works engage the traditional dialectic between the ethnographic claim to veritable objectivity of unprejudiced witness and the personal travelogue as the search for the subjective. She draws on photographic and filmic footage and combines the two in expanded film and video installations. Crossing the threshold of early 20th Century missionaries' and travellers' reportages, which served to reinforce the sense of 'place' of Africans and Asians in the colonial hierarchy of power, Tan interlinks personal and social formations of identity.

Tan was short listed for The Deutsche Borse Photography Prize earlier this year. She has a solo exhibition at The Pinakotek der Moderne, Munich until January 08 and her film 'A Lapse of Memory' can be seen at London's Royal Institute for British Architects until 30 October. Other solo exhibitions include the de Pont Foundation, Tilburg, Villa Arson, Nice and Akademie der Kuenste, Berlin. Recent notable group exhibitions include Sujeto Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Castilla y Leon, 2005; Istanbul Biennial 2003; ICP Triennial, New York; Documenta 11, Kassel; the 49th Venice Biennale and the Berlin Biennale, 2001. Fiona Tan was short listed for the first Artes Mundi Prize in 2003.
