Thomas Schütte is one of the most important artists of his generation. His installations, sculptures, models, drawings and watercolours take different and often contradictory forms. Schuette's art looks utilitarian offering sustenance, shelter and companionship yet delivers false promises and alien worlds. He uses a wide spectrum of colours and a range of materials to revision the basic constituents - natural, cultural, political - of everyday life whilst exploring fundamental question about the artist and society.

Thomas Schütte is one of two winners for the Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth project - Schütte's sculpture, Model for a Hotel is currently on display. Each piece is to remain on the plinth for around 18 months.
Fourth Plinth: Thomas Schütte

A show of the artist's early works can be seen at Leeds' Henry Moore Institute until 6 January 2008. A solo exhibition earlier this year was the inaugural exhibition in Frith Street Gallery's new Golden Square location. Thomas Schütte was included in 2005's Venice Biennale where he was awarded The Golden Lion. He has had numerous exhibitions in museums worldwide, most recently at Museu Serralves, Porto, Portugal. Others include Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum and ARC, Paris in 1990, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Wurttembergischer Kunstverein, the Musee d'Art Contemporain, Nimes in 1994, the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, 1998 and three exhibitions at New York's DIA Centre for Contemporary Art between 1998 and 1999.
