One of the most distinctive voices in British contemporary photography, John Riddy's practice exists in a singular relationship to a particular photographic inheritance. His photography is made in the belief that clear photographic description allows for the most complex and unique of images. Riddy focuses on the particular poetics of place and space. His subject matter is broad; the architecture of Ancient Rome or the modernism of Rietveld and Lubetkin; from the London streets at night to a small town at the base of Mount Fuji. Time, atmosphere, spatial illusion and cultural histories are compressed and extended in pictures that aim to defeat our expectations of photographic description.
John Riddy's exhibition Views from Shin-Fuji was staged at London's Victoria and Albert Museum in 2006. Riddy's
work has been included in many group exhibitions including: Cloud Pictures Translated at Aargauer Kunsthaus in 2005. Other shows include: British Modernism from The Thirties (photographs
of selected 30's buildings), Design Museum, London; John McLaughlin, John Riddy, Fred Sandback, Lawrence Markey Gallery, New York and Jan Dibbets, John Riddy, Richard Ross, Milton Keynes
Gallery.
He is represented in public and private collections worldwide including the Arts Council of Great Britain, Group Lhoist Collection, Belgium, Goldman Sachs International, Rubell Family Collection
and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
