"The artwork moved from the object to action within the space of relation, the work concerning being in relation." May 1994. Barcelona.
In Horsfield's work photographs form a small but significant part. Most of his recent photographs were made as part of collaborative social projects. As with much of his work, they are concerned with how we stand in relation to one to another, how relation, constantly in flux, determines community and how individuality is inextricably bound to relation, rather than alienation or separation. In his work, Horsfield integrates elements that are usually given over to politics, philosophy and ethics, so that art forms only one element among others in a complete thought process.
'Relation' a major touring exhibition of Craigie Horsfield's was recently at Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art earlier this year.
This exhibition is accompanied by a comprehensive monographic publication.
In recent years, Horsfield has had solo exhibitions at several important international institutions, including the Stedelijk van Abbe Museum, Eindhoven; Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh;
Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He was included in Documenta X and XI, Kassel and Whitney Biennial 2003.
