FIONA BANNER
NUDE

4 May - 1 July 2006 (exhibition date extended)
Frith Street Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Fiona Banner.
Fiona Banner: NUDE works list
For this exhibition Banner continues her exploration of the problems and possibilities of language. Much of the work deals with The Female
Nude as a classical artistic subject, here described in words directly from life. In sharp contrast to this gentle and meditative act Banner
has applied one such description to the wing of a Tornado aircraft whose brutal scale dwarfs the gallery's domestic interior. These startling
and very immediate works perform an almost complete cycle of intimacy and alienation; the dynamic between the two has been a constant in the artist's work.
Language and the written word are central to Banner's practice, she has in the past created epic word-scapes - blow by blow accounts of war
and porn films - pieces which beguile the eye but never deny the more problematic nature of the subject matter.
Fiona Banner was born in Merseyside in 1966. She was nominated for The Turner Prize in 2003. Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK
and abroad including the Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, Aachen and Dundee Contemporary Arts, both 2002. Her work has also been exhibited at Art Now,
Tate Britain, Hayward Gallery, London and Charles H Scott Gallery, Vancouver amongst others. A solo show of Banners' work is scheduled for Los Angeles
later this year. Banner is represented in many collections worldwide including: Arts Council England, Tate Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art, New York
and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis.
